The Location

Aljezur, Western Algarve, Portugal

A magnificent modern-styled villa, the cliff-top Boathouse boasts stunning, uninterrupted ocean and river valley views. Situated in one of Europe’s most pristine nature reserves – the Parque Natural da Costa Vicentina – this luxurious home is beautifully unique.

Less than 2 hours from Faro airport and 3 hours from Lisbon, this peaceful location is close to some of the region's best golf courses, vineyards, surf spots and coastal hiking trails.

Given its peerless location and along with recent legislation, nothing like the Boathouse is likely to be built ever again.

Remote, serene, picturesque, you can simply delight in nature at its most unspoiled, soak up the sun by the private pool or wander down to the beach and enjoy the spectacular Atlantic surf – all are directly accessible from your doorstep.

The unrestricted views to the front of the Boathouse encompass the large expanse of the river and valley with the Monchique Mountains providing the final framing for the rising sun. The rear affords views over idyllic marine wilderness, Amoreira Bay's golden beaches, sand dunes and crashing surf, to the ocean's horizon.

The Features

The interior is all wood-floored (bathrooms are tiled) with all rooms offering under-floor heating and custom-built features. Enormous windows showcase the nature reserve's unspoiled beauty and flood the lounge, dining, kitchen and living areas with light.

All woodwork and stainless steel features have been hand-crafted by local artisans, including the interior spiral staircase.

The Place

Inspired by the image of a modern cruiser rounding the Ribeira de Aljezur’s headland on its way out to sea, the Boathouse was designed by renowned local architect Joao Fonseca.

Recently completed to the highest build standard, it occupies four levels – the upper two floors offering expansive deck areas with four discreet outdoor dining spaces. Two of these areas are sail-shaded and sheltered from prevailing winds.

Given its exposed location, the Boathouse was designed to the most thermally and acoustically efficient build standard. A steel-framed structure is encased with polyurethane ensuring it is cool in summer and warm in winter. Solar panels provide all the hot water, underfloor and pool heating, as appropriate.

The courtyard apartment comprises a full kitchen, living room with adjoining bathroom, two bedrooms with full en suite bathrooms as well as the sauna (comfortably seating six), bathroom and air-conditioned mini gym.

All five bedrooms are situated on the pool deck and hot-tub level – two have ocean views and three face the river. Further up the spiral staircase is the main open-plan living area. Flooding the lounge, dining and well-appointed kitchen areas with light, expansive glass windows dramatically frame the captivating seascape, valley and mountain vistas. Above, and serviced by a dumb waiter from the kitchen, the upper deck's outdoor dining area comfortably seats twelve and basks in panoramic views.
